TV News and reality: Ethical questions

Freedom of journalism in a democratic society is the freedom to raise questions, discuss the most acute social contradictions, criticize the actions of the government and other public or private institutions when these actions threaten the public interest, question the inaction of the authorities or abuse of power.

The screen reality reflects the totality of inquiries and interests of viewers, whose rights to electronic means of communication are no less thorough than the rights of journalists.

Where there is freedom, there is also a responsibility for their decisions. In relation to a TV journalist, this means responsibility:

  • to society as a whole;
  • before the audience of viewers;
  • before the heroes of the programs and films;
  • to the community of journalists he represents;
  • before the broadcaster, on behalf of which appeals to the audience;
  • before himself.

With reference to television information, the ethical background of a journalist is the reliability of each message, the completeness of the facts presented and the impartiality of the author's position.

Trust in a fact or opinion is due to the trust in the source of information - the viewer wants to know where the message came from and to whom the statement relates. Information programs should not cause the viewer to doubt the nature of the screen message or generate false ideas about what he sees.

The most important condition for objectivity is the completeness of the facts presented and the published judgments. In the screen message about the event, facts that are essential for understanding what is happening should not be omitted, or a point of view that unilaterally illuminates the picture, even if this is the viewpoint of an employee of the information heading, should be omitted.

Reliability and completeness of information as criteria for journalism can be achieved only on condition of impartiality.

The call of a TV journalist is not limited to public self-expression, especially in news headings, which it can only discredit. This position is not in verbal assessments, but in striving for the authenticity and completeness of the facts and opinions presented, allowing the viewer to draw conclusions independently.

A professional report contains all the facts necessary to understand the situation depicted. But it also excludes side information that can cause negative social consequences. Otherwise, the journalist risks not being so much an informant as an instigator.

The concept of undesirable information does not call into question the principle of openness and freedom of speech.

Freedom of journalism in a democratic society is the freedom to raise questions, discuss the most acute social contradictions, criticize the actions of the government and other public or private institutions when these actions threaten the public interest, question the inaction of the authorities or abuse of power.
