The Fall or Liberation of Saigon is all about capturing the capital of Vietnam by Viet Cong in 1975. Why is it so important? That’s because this prominent historical events marked ending the Vietnam War and starting a new transition period to the reunification of this country as a socialist republic. Everything happened when North Vietnamese forces started a final attack on this city on April 29. The forced commanded by Nguyen Van Toan suffered massive artillery bombardments. They killed the last 2 American soldiers in this country.
The next day, North Vietnamese troops occupied the most significant spots in the city and raised their flag over the presidential palace. That’s why the government of the South Vietnam capitulated very soon, and Saigon was renamed to Ho Chi Minh City. Its capture was preceded by evaluating almost all US military servicemen and civilians along with many Vietnamese civilians who were related to the southern regime. This evacuation culminated in the largest helicopter operation in the history. A decline in the population of this city was resulted by the flight of many refugees, ended war, and new rules set by communists.
The US understood that its token presence in Saigon would soon become unwelcome, so all remaining Americans were evacuated. The surrender of this city was announced by General Duong Van Minh who was a president of South Vietnam at that time. He explained that this decision was made to avoid any unnecessary bloodshed. Saigon was taken by North Vietnamese forces on April 30, and there was only some little resistance.
William Westmoreland was the US commander charged to conduct all operations in Vietnam in 1968. He commanded many units of young American men placed in this alien environment without any clear front in this conflict. For many of them, living in jungles was a horrific experience so that their morale corrupted fast. In the US, there were many demonstrations against this war that also contributed to this outcome. Many veterans decided to take part in stopping it.
The US put its great efforts to withdraw without losing this conflict, so the government agreed with the establishment of peace with North Vietnam in 1973, so soldiers started to leave this country for good. At this point, this war conflict left its black mark on humanity. There were many Americans who died, were missing or wounded.
