It’s very convenient to think of wars as having neat beginnings and endings but that’s rarely the case, especially World War II. Europe in the end of World War II was a continent in complete chaos. There were millions of people who had no idea where to go. People were morally destroyed and lost. People didn’t really know what was right and wrong anymore. Their usual moral foundations were burnt down. People so used to see violence and death around them that they had begun to look at it as something that was quite normal. That was the atmosphere in Europe soon after the end of World War II.
Germany was absolutely defeated and Nazi leaders were tried for crimes against humanity at Nuremberg, the former site of Nazi propaganda triumphs. Hitler killed himself to escape trial and execution. Germany cities were transformed into ruins because of a massive bombing campaign. However, a lot of cities of Europe felt that way. After the War Germany was divided into four parts by the victorious powers, to reach a more permanent political settlement.
Britain was badly damaged by extensive bombing during the 1940 blitz by the Germans. The economy of England depended on the help of the US. Because of the tough economy situation, England had to phase out most of its remaining imperial holdings in the years immediately following the war.
France was shocked and devastated by Nazi occupation forces. Retribution was taken upon collaborators. England and France didn’t have such power as they had before the War. The United States and the Soviet Union became the main players.
The Soviet Union was extremely bad damaged during the war, and western Russia was devastated by the land warfare which was primarily on Russian territory. However, during the war Russian managed to create a large and powerful army, which occupied most of Eastern Europe at the end of the war. The great resources allowed them to became a super-power.
The economy of the United States was really stimulated by the World War II. The Great Depression ended and new industrial complexes were built all over the United States. The US didn’t receive any physical destruction and because of that, the U.S. economy dominated the world economy.
So World War II is known as the most awful and cruel war ever. These years were years of fear, violence, and death. The world did change after this war. The after effects of this war were very different for each country but almost everyone was a victim of it.
