What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

At all times in all cultures, the same question confronts a person: how to overcome remoteness, how to achieve unity, how to go beyond the limits of one's own individual life and gain unity.

The answers are different. This question can be answered by worshiping animals, human victims, militaristic seizure and immersion in luxury, ascetic renunciation and obsession with work, artistic creativity, love of God and love for man.

The answer to a certain extent depends on the level of individuality achieved by man. The full answer is in achieving interpersonal unity, merging with another person, in love.

The desire for interpersonal fusion is the most powerful aspiration in a person. This is the most fundamental attraction; it is the force that makes the members of the human family, clan, family, society keep together. Failure in its achievement leads to insanity or destruction - the destruction of oneself and others. Without love, humanity could not last a day.

As in all semantic problems, the answer can only be arbitrary. It is important that we know what kind of unity we mean when we talk about love. Or we mean love as a mature answer to the problem of existence, or we speak of immature forms of love, which can be called a symbiotic union.

Symbiotic unity has its own biological model in the relationship between the pregnant mother and the fetus. They are two beings and at the same time is one thing.

Passive form of symbiotic unity is subordination, or, if you use the clinical term masochism. The masochist avoids an unbearable sense of isolation and loneliness, making himself an integral part of another person.

The active form of symbiotic unity is domination, or, using a psychological term, correlated with masochism, sadism. The sadist wants to avoid loneliness and a sense of isolation, making another person an integral part of himself.

In contrast to symbiotic unity, mature love is a unity, provided that one maintains one's own integrity, one's own individuality. Love is an active force in a person who destroys the walls that separate a person from his loved ones; which unites it with others.

Such feeling as love is something really complicated. Love is not a passive effect, it is an activity. In the most general form, the active nature of love can be described by affirming that to love is to give first and not to take. Love is an active interest in the life and development of what we love.

At all times in all cultures, the same question confronts a person: how to overcome remoteness, how to achieve unity, how to go beyond the limits of one's own individual life and gain unity.

The answers are different.
