The Major League Baseball, A Source of Entertainment

Most Americans consider the Major League Baseball as the source of entertainment. There are millions of people who turn out during a regular season to see there their favorite players and teams which play a really good game of baseball. However, some people see one more side of this form of entertainment. Baseball is considered to be as much of a business as it is a source of recreation. These people know that billions of dollars are invested in this game and sometimes some millions are lost. The owners and the players have the responsibility to keep this business running well and, of course, to make sure no dollar is lost. The owner and the players of baseball want to keep it running well, that is why they need to agree on the things such as free agency, salary caps, contraction and taxes. All of these things can help the business to run great and keep some baseball teams from dominating the league and running this kind of business.

Such game as baseball doesn’t have any form of salary cap, although baseball has a luxury tax in the clubs that every year spend beyond a certain amount of the salaries for the players. The first discussion which concerned the salary cap in the baseball negotiations occurred in 1989. The owners of some teams proposed a cap that would limit the amount of the salary any team could pay to its players. As for the players who had 6 and more years of experience, they could become free agents. However, these players wouldn’t be signed by the team if doing so would put the team over the salary cap. In addition, the part of the proposal of the owners was a guarantee to the players of 43% of the revenue from the sold tickets and the broadcast contracts which was about 82% of the total revenues of the owners.

As for the purpose of proposed salary cap, it is illustrated as the way of protection for the teams in the small markets, like Minnesota and Milwaukee from having their talented free agents bought up by the bigger teams in Los Angeles and New York. In theory, it is shown that the teams in the cities would be unable to dominate the free agent market because the cap would limit the players they could sign. It is also so because the teams spend really large sums of money for developing the young players and a salary cap would allow them to retain more and more of the young players because of the limited opportunities which the free agents have.
