The Alchemist is a book written by Paulo Coelho, and it tells readers a story of one young shepherd Santiago. He manages to find a true treasure beyond his wild dreams and hopes. He also learns how to listen to his own heart and realize that his dreams can come true. At the very beginning, he is just a humble shepherd with no major desires, but his destiny finds them, so he finds a hidden treasure many miles away from his home.
When the main character meets Melchizedek, one strange wise man who calls himself a kind of a far land, Santiago decides to seek his hidden treasure and pursue his dreams. That’s why he sells all sheep and goes to Africa to make it come true. When he arrives in Africa, it becomes evidence to him that everything is not as easy as he thinks because he is robbed and left alone far away from his home. He doesn’t speak Arabic, so he thinks about giving up and returning home.
Eventually, Santiago decides to get a job and carry on to earn money and go back home. Only the last minute, he decides to take his risk and join one caravan that goes to Egypt. This is where he meets one Englishman who did many things only to be able to meet one famous alchemist. As they keep traveling throughout the desert, he tells Santiago about different alchemy secrets, so he finds his ideas quite similar to the ones told by Melchizedec. However, Santiago still prefers to learn all secrets by observing the world around him, while his new friend chooses complex books as his teachers. Finally, they both start hearing rumors about an upcoming tribal war.
When they come to the oasis, Santiago meets Fatima, a beautiful girl, and he falls in love at once. He also has the vision of an upcoming battle, so he becomes a counselor and stays at this oasis with his love. This is where he meets the alchemist who keeps telling him that he will still find his treasure.
Santiago learns how to listen to his hears that can be quite treacherous. People need to listen to it very intently, or they may only fool themselves. The alchemist and Santiago become prisoners and he realizes that his hidden treasure is in his homeland. This story ended with a picture of how Santiago finds it near the tree close to his house where he lives with Fatima happily and for a long time. The author invites all readers to make their own conclusions about the plot and their meaning of life.
