Story Analysis of Catcher in the Rye

Released in 1951, the novel by D.D. Salinger "The Catcher in the Rye" is a story of a seventeen-year-old American student Holden Caulfield, who was expelled before Christmas from the Pansy school for poor academic performance.

The main idea of the novel - the rejection of lies, manifested as in moral norms, existing in society, and in people, events, objects - is closely related to the image of the protagonist. Holden Caulfield introduces the reader not only to the external, eventual side of his life, but also to internal ideas about people, life situations and his own character.

The main character behaves, as befits a seventeen-year-old. Everything he talks about is presented to them with the utmost frankness: the school, in which the children of rich parents study, is seen by Holden as a place in which there are many crooks and very few "brave and noble boys"; the teacher of history overtakes him with melancholy with his pathetic, battered dressing gown, radiating through the neckline with senile ribs and medicines for colds.

Communication with adults does not give Holden much pleasure. He often noticed that when he behaved like a child, the adults taught him, but they never noted the cases when he behaved like an adult. Reflecting on this, the protagonist comes to a simple and terrible conclusion that people do not see the essence of the issue under discussion or other people.

Speaking of the fact that he is annoying in others, Holden with merciless directness points to those small details, which most people do not even think about, but nevertheless the same is irritated by the hero of the novel: touching personal things, imaginary cleanliness, attention to external Details and disregard for the true essence of the subject. The strongest thing in people Holden does not like their desire to be who they really are not.

Seeing the shortcomings of other people, Holden Caulfield does not close his eyes and to his own flaws: he knows that he is a liar, because in conversations with adults he shamelessly lied to them; understands that he is a coward when he reflects on his inability to hit a person in the face and stuff.

In this case, Holden is a deeply feeling person. He likes to read good books, the main criterion of quality for which is the desire to make their authors the best friends. He appreciates in people their strengths. He is inclined to philosophical reflections. He appreciates not only the physical side of love, but also spiritual.
