The Wizard of Oz History

May 15, 1856 was born world-famous American writer, classic children's literature Lyman Frank Baum.

Baum entered the history of world literature as the creator of one of the most read fabulous serials. The stories of the writer are brought up by more generations.

For more than 100 years, the works of the "court historian of Oz", as Baum liked to call him, are published and reprinted in America, translated into dozens of foreign languages, plays, musicals and films are staged on them.

The first book, which Baum officially released in 1899, was "Tales of Uncle Gusak." The writer's children liked the stories very much, but they wanted more magical adventures, and Gusak was hopelessly "tied" to the bird's yard. The storyteller took note of the remark and began to write a saga about the magical Land of Oz In completing a book about a little Dorothy girl from Kansas, who was "transported" by a hurricane to a country that no one else had an idea of, Baum did not even expect to write another 13 books about Oz. The writer's children constantly demanded "the continuation of the banquet," and his fantasy worked with renewed vigor.

During the writer's life, six films were shot according to his saga.

According to the maps compiled by Baum, in the country of Oz four main regions are distinguished: the country of migrants, munchkins, gillikins and kwodings.

After the death of the writer, a new book about the Land of Oz was published every year - this time by Peru writer Ruth Thompson. At first the books were published under the name of Baum. The permanent artist-designer of the series John Neil also wrote several tales about Oz. After his death in 1943, the annual tradition of the appearance of a new book was interrupted.

The picture of Victor Fleming "The Wizard of Oz" with little Judy Garland as Dorothy in 1940 was nominated for an Oscar in six categories, and in 1989 she was placed on the National Film Registry of the United States. The painting was shot in color, which was quite a rare phenomenon at the time. Each scene was shot by a special camera for three films at once, which then were reduced to one. The camera was incredibly heavy and could not work more than half an hour without a break.

In 2013, Sam Raimi's film "Oz: Great and Terrible" was released on the screen, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weiss. Since the books of Baum never told of the past of the almighty magician, the film became a kind of cinematic preface to the events described in the first book about Oz.
