The two-act ballet The Nutcracker was commissioned by the Tchaikovsky Directorate of Imperial Theaters in early 1891. Soon the composer received from Petipa written a detailed program of the Nutcracker. And on February 25 Tchaikovsky already reports in one of the letters that he is working on ballet indefatigably. And in January-February 1892 the ballet was already ready and fully instrumented.
The Nutcracker's music was first performed in one of the St. Petersburg Symphony Concerts of the Russian Musical Society on March 7, 1892.
