Critical Film Overview - Winter's Bone

The drama of director Debra Granik "Winter’s Bone" is an example of this kind of independent cinema, entirely designed for personal perception by the viewer. The picture does not seek to evoke something like a sense of flying over everyday life, without superfluous preface.

The main heroine of “Winter’s Bone", Ree lives on a family plot belonging to their family, dragging a sick mother and younger brothers and sister on their shoulders. They are poor and barely making ends meet, but then it turns out that Ree's father, who manufactures methamphetamine, recently left the prison building a house with a plot of land. And if the grief-father does not appear at the next court session, the Ree family will lose even a roof over his head. And that's why a seventeen-year-old girl with a cold exterior begins a vain attempt to find her father who did not appear at home.

These backyards of life, the gray facelessness of the wilderness, in which the action of Debra Granik's painting takes place, almost all emotions are dismissed from the first minutes of viewing, allowing one to calmly reflect on what is happening. But this fact does not fully fit the "Winter’s Bone", because someone can just quickly bore the details shown on the screen of the existence of Ree and her family. And let it be so, let the movie bore someone and depress someone, he does not aspire to get the favor of a broad audience, hoping to catch someone with little things of the happening action in the hope that someone will find in him something from his life. And having found such a spectator, "The Winter Bone" does not look like another tape from the category of his own kind.

I will not hide it - this film managed to catch me. The reserve is not all of its action entirely, but the specific individual impulse of the main character, her opposition to one against all, because apart from her there is nobody to take care of her family. And in many ways this inner impulse is so offensive due to the individual actor's breakthrough, Jennifer Lawrence.

It is a heavy movie, a good showing off moments of life within itself, but not yet able to hook the viewer entirely. And it would seem - in this world of faded colors there is everything to create a self-sufficient drama, which does not need any emotional explosion, looking good without it. But you think only until the beginning of the final credits, unexpectedly causing a feeling of dissatisfaction in the soul, as if something was not enough.
