Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States and he was the president during a very difficult period. America was in a state of Civil War and the country was nearly separated. In his famous speech "The Gettysburg Address" he showed his real intentions, thoughts, and plans. Through this speech, he clearly says what the country was, what the country is and what his hopes and dreams for the future were.
When the United States were established, it was founded on a very famous principle, that “all men are created equal.” Lincoln believed that America is founded on this idea because everyone was tired of the tyranny. The first Americans wanted really a lot of things, but most of all they wanted to be considered equals in the eyes of man. These were some reasons for the Revolutionary War. So as we can see, equal rights and freedom have been extremely important for Americans. However, as they receive this freedom, they began to oppress other races.
Abraham Lincoln wanted equal rights for every citizen of the U.S. He was always against slavery and his aim was the extinction of slavery. He stated that slavery shouldn’t expand into any more territories. Lincoln is considered quite a successful politician dealing with the civil rights of Negroes. However, Lincoln didn’t know how to integrate black people into white American society. He offered black people to return to their homeland, to Africa. However, black people didn’t like it and they were not enthusiastic. They were much more connected with the United States than with Africa.
However, there is an awful myth that Lincoln was a horrible president, a racist and he loved slavery. This is really ridiculous because Lincoln did so much to reach equal rights for everyone. However, Lincoln wasn’t an abolitionist. Lincoln waited for slavery to die naturally. Abolitionists, by contrast, knew exactly what should be done about it: Slavery should be immediately abolished. Lincoln strongly believed that slavery was morally wrong. Lincoln preferred to emancipate the slaves gradually by compensating their owners with federal funds. This was a really smart decision. The Emancipation Proclamation was also a very important step to the extinction of slavery.
So Abraham Lincoln was always against slavery and he did really a lot for emancipation of black people and their future. He managed to explain people the main principle that “all men are created equal.”
