True or False Scientific Theories

Firstly, it is essential to understand the meaning of the term “scientific theory”. Scientific theory is a type of a theory that is used in the scientific method. According to Jaime Tanner, who is a professor of biology at Marlboro College, scientific theory is a little different from the word “theory” that has common usage in the lay public. When ordinary people use the word “theory”, they mean an idea that someone has in his/her head, but “scientific theory” is the way that scientists interpret facts they have. Starting from the ancient times people created theories and a lot of them can be called scientific, because having a number of facts people interpreted them how they could. Of course, with time and great development in technologies, a lot of the theories that considered to be truthful, are now false. However, some of them are proved on practice.

It is necessary to understand that science is not about being true or false, science is about making a model that predicts. If you look only at major scientific theories, you will never find those that are false, because there are enough evidence that support them. There are a lot of theories that are considered to be false, but their role is also very important in scientific world, because they help to find true theories. In other words, every false theory is one more step that leads to the theory that deserves to get status “true”. False theories also give some results. Sometimes, they can be quite unexpected for everyone. Scientists can look at one and the same theory from different angles and can test it using different methods, which means that there is always a chance that false theory is actually right.

For instance, the Theory of Evolution is considered right, but some new theory can take its place and to be considered true. The Theory of Evolution perfectly explains the origin of species throughout the history of Earth, but it doesn’t provide any explanation of how people could go from a non-biological Earth to the first living cells. This means that there is always place for a new theory that also can be true for one period of time and become false in the next one. It also can change the Theory of Evolution, so that they will explain each other. The most interesting things about theories are that not all of them can be proved and even if some of them have strong evidence, it doesn’t mean that this or that theory will always be true.
