1904 World’s Fair – When the World Came to St. Louis

The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, commonly known as the St. Louis World's Fair was an international exposition that took place in St. Louis. We can say that the 20th century was born in Forest Park with the great and fantastic The World's Fair of 1904. It was held from April 30 through December 1, 1904. About twenty million peoplevisited the fair, an average of more than 100,000 each day. Opening day was a really brilliant spectacle and a crowd of 200,000 people is another testament to that. Exhibition organizers had created about 1,500 buildings —including a few grand “palaces”.The Fair celebrated the centennial of President Thomas Jefferson’s brilliant real estate deal with Napoleon Bonaparte of France. The idea to celebrate the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase appeared in 1898 and former Governor of Missouri, David R. Francis directed this movement. The city gave $5 million for the fair and another $5 million was appropriated by United States Congress. The fair was planned to open in 1903, but it was becoming bigger and bigger and finally the opening was postponed until 1904.The exposition made from the western half of the park a fairyland with white palaces, lagoons, and amazing landscaping. A real centerpiece of the fair was Festival Hall. Eight exhibition palaces were built a fan-shaped plan and it looked fantastic. The World's Fair was the largest of all fairs before and since. It covered an area of 1,272 acres. Visitors could see different exhibits like a cow made of butter or they could first time see the automobiles and electric lights. Visitors could enjoy ice tea and hot dogs. By the way, this Fair made popular ice cream and Dr. Pepper. The 1904 World’s Fair provided people with many opportunities to have fun and spend your time with a great pleasure. Visitors could use about 50 different amusements to entertain themselves. For instance, they could see contortionists, reenactments of the Boer War, babies in incubators, the Dancing Girls of Madrid, and Animal Circus. However, one of the best amusements was the Observation Wheel. This wheel provided a fantastic view of the fair. The fair closed on December 1, 1904, but restoring the site for park use was completed nine years later, by April 30, 1913. So, many Americans remember the exhibition as the idyllic time that preceded World War. Now we can say that this fair was one of the largest and greatest World’s Fairs ever.
