The Slaves and The Slave Owner's Views of Slavery

From a modern point of view of slavery it is one of the most controversial institutions of the past.

Among the population of the Roman society there was very high proportion of slaves. Some historians estimate that 90 percent of the free population in Italy by the end of the first century BC, were the ancestors of slaves. The proportion of slaves in Rome was so large that some Romans left no written evidence of the dangers of this situation.

The living conditions and the expectations of slaves in ancient Rome were the same type and are closely related to their occupation. Slaves normally were involved in exhausting work, such as agriculture and mining in the mines, they had no life perspective.

Owning slaves was common practice among Roman citizens, regardless of their social status. Even the poor Roman citizens could own a slave or two. In Roman Egypt, it is likely that each artisan had 2 or even 3 slaves. Wealthy people could hold a much larger number of slaves.

The demand for slaves in Rome was very high for several reasons. There was only one exception; the slaves were employed in almost every industry, for example in mines, agriculture and the household was always a high demand for slaves.

Slaves provided themselves in four main ways: as war prisoners, as victims of pirate attacks and robbery, as a result of trade or through breeding.

Today people believe slavery is immoral and inhumane. However, there is no evidence that it was even thought in Roman society. All major economic, social and legal power in ancient Rome work together to slavery system was maintained indefinitely.

Slaves were considered necessary social counterweight to free people. Civil liberty and slavery were two sides of the same coin. Even when they were introduced more humane laws that have improved the living conditions of the slaves, this did not imply that the number of slaves must be reduced.

In Roman society the slave owner was able to provide the freedom of his slave. This process, which was known as "freestyle", could be achieved in various ways: the owner could give his freedom as a reward for their loyalty and impeccable service, freestyle could be bought by a slave owner, and sometimes it was better to release the slave.

The examples of the latter case were merchants who needed someone who could sign contracts and perform various operations on their behalf and had the legal right to do so. Former slaves even had the opportunity to become Roman citizens.
