My Move to the United States

When I was younger it had never crossed my mind that I would visit the United States of America one day. However, my life changed unexpectedly. My parents and I moved to the United States when I was fifteen years old. I was a little scared and thrilled at the same time, because I understood that it was a major change in my life and that there were so many opportunities in front of me.

Our neighbors had moved to the United States several years before us, and my aunt was living there too. For this reason our family knew that we would not be alone there once we arrived. It was comforting to know that there would be somebody there to help us, give advice and tell us about our new country.

Before we moved to the USA, we needed to do medical examinations, make passports and get our visas. We also had to sell some of our things here in our city. My mother and father knew that we did not need to take many things with us, and that we would buy most of the things on the spot. We bought some gifts for our friends and relatives in the USA, and took some clothes, books and family albums with us, because we wanted to remember the most important moments of our lives. We did not sell our apartment all at once, but we granted it on lease with the goal to sell it later.

Our way to the United States was long, because we flew to New York first, then we had to change planes in Salt Lake City, and only after that we finally landed in Idaho. We were going to live in a town which was much smaller than our home city. Our new home town was called Twin Falls, and its population was approximately thirty-five thousand people at that time. Our friends met us at the airport when we arrived and took us to their house to welcome us.

During the first weeks upon our arrival we lived in the house of our friends, however we did rent our own house after a certain time. The houses were very different from what I was used to at home. All the people lived in their own private houses, while our family used to live in an apartment building back in our country. It was interesting to notice that most of the people drove their own cars in the United States, and in our country using public transportation was more common.

We arrived in the USA in August, and I started attending the American high school in September. This experience was also valuable and interesting for me, because the teaching style and the students were completely different from the ones at my previous school. After a while I got used to the changes and was happy with my new life in the USA.
