Analysis of My Last Duchess by Robert Browning

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was born May 7, 1812 in Kemberuelle, near London. His father served in the bank. The family valued education highly, and Robert at sixteen became a student at the University of London, but when a few months later, he left the school, the parents did not mend his obstacles, encouraging passion for a young man to self-education and creative inclinations.

The works of Browning is divided into three periods:. 1832-1846 years, 1846-1861 years and the period after 1861, when Browning married the famous poet Elizabeth Barrett. After the death of Elizabeth Browning returned to his homeland.

Browning interested in French and Italian national character. In the monologue "My Last Duchess" Browning first set out to recreate the characters of the Italian Renaissance, anticipating in this respect poetry collection "Men and Women" (1855). This poem is important landmark in the evolution of the works of the poet artistic manner.

The poem begins with a mid-conversation between two interlocutors, the owner of the house and his guest, considered the female portrait. This circumstance, as well as an indication of the subtitle according to which the action takes place in Ferrara, helps the reader's imagination travel back to Italy of the Renaissance. Monologue is constructed in such a way as to gradually highlight the facets of its owner. None of the interlocutors is named by Browning. Moreover, the guest assigned only the role of a passive listener. The history of "The Last Duchess" shrouded in mystery. We can only guess that the Duke was very jealous and tyrannical towards his wife buoyant. It is also obvious that the Duchess had to suffer a lot, and it was a sad end: whether it is withered, devoid of the slightest pleasures of life, or was killed by her husband or by his orders. The fact that only Duke can lift the veil that hides a beautiful portrait, suggests that he cherishes the memory of his wife that lives in his heart remorse and pain of loss of his beloved wife. However, as in the classic novel of the Renaissance, in the finals we are waiting for an unexpected outcome. The Duchess is the "last", not because Duke hope for happiness and love in this world died, but because he is going to get a new wife. In light of this goal emerges a completely different perception of the history of the "last of the Duchess." She is just one of the many victims. The resulting associative connection of this image with the image of Bluebeard gives it a demonic character.
