The Message of Rip Van Winkle

Artwork of W. Irving is a romantic revolution in the minds of American Art. Short story "Rip Van Winkle" was first published in 1819.

Irving has always singled out a creative approach to traditional genres: he was inclined to break their canons and mix paint. He mixed a leisurely abstract thinking characteristic of an essay with a specific description of morals inherent in the essay; he added romantic individualization of characters and saturated the product of the elements of the original folklore of American settlers.

The action of "Rip Van Winkle" is related to the past. But this is not a historical essay; Irving is guided by the principles of romantic historiography that is introduced into an artistic usage of Scott.

It is noteworthy that the basis of "Rip Van Winkle" is put by the European fairy tale story of the shepherd Klaus Peters, slept for twenty years in the mountains. Address Irving to the folklore heritage of the Old World had a programmatic character.

"Wonderful" element in the story "Rip Van Winkle" is densely overgrown with the realities of American life and organic fusion with motifs of the original US folklore. A quick hint at the possible inaccuracy of the "magic" version twenty years of absence Rip Van Winkle suggests that he was just hiding from the domestic tyranny of his quarrelsome wife. In this case, Rip - a truly grand joker, and the whole incredible story - a great story-drawing.

Moreover, the overall magical and poetic atmosphere is not dissipated because the "miracle" is able to rational interpretation. Novella, on the other hand, becomes a purely national dimension: the miracle of rationalization is achieved by treatment of Irving to American folklore - the original genre of "draw-story." There is some proving evidence about the consistent, though perhaps largely intuitive appeal to a specific genre of romantic novels varieties - to the literary fairy tale.

Gradually, through trial and creative errors which otherwise turned around undoubted success, first building on the plot of any particular European fairy tales, then - on generalizing fairytale plot, the laws of the construction of which he has already managed to master, the writer, in the end, he creates brilliant examples of romantic literary fairy tale. "Rip Van Winkle" can be regarded as a first attempt at writing in the fantastic genre.

"Rip Van Winkle" - a story-tale belonging to its country and its time. The folklore and fairy-tale stuff here takes the current problematic.
