My Antonia is a popular book written by Willa Cather, and it’s all about some love account about one pioneer woman. The main character is Antonia who is introduced by the author as a young woman who keeps maturing throughout this story. Jim Burden is one of her good friends, and he described how entrancing this woman really is. She changes from her manly lifestyle habits and transformed into a young woman who ends up being a great mother. Antonina starts to explore her boyish side after her father’s death, and Jim also lost his parents.
He has to relocate to live with grandparents who are simple and kind people with a generous nature. This is where Jim meets new neighbors and other people who influence him a lot. Antonia is their older daughter, and they soon make good friends, so they spend a lot of time together. Her family is poor and they don’t do quite well, despite the efforts of Jim’s grandparents. Jim does his best to support his new friend when her father shoots himself because she is very depressed. All neighbors are good people who do everything possible to support a family left without one parent.
Antonia has to start faming in the field, just like men, and she must give up going to a local school because she has no time and power. When Jim needs to relocated to a nearby town, she decided to go there too to work, so they still spend time together. This is when she starts having a bad reputation because of her interest in dancing, and that’s why she loses her new job too. Jim wants to live this town as soon as possible and he gets ready to enter a college. There, he becomes quite close with his mentor Cleric and starts dating a girl, but he soon decides to leave her and go to Harvard with his new friend. Jim seems to forget about Antonia at that time.
However, a few years later, before he enters a law school, Jim goes back to his small town where he finally hears something about Antonia. She seems to be pregnant and engaged with a young man called Donovan. Unfortunately, he leaves her soon after she decides to visit him in Denver, so Antonia has to return to the farm owned by her family where she has a child and does her best to avoid other people. Jim decides to visit her and tells her about his true feelings, and she is amazed that he isn’t disappointed in her. This book written by Willa Cather is a bit autobiographical and is tells readers a great love story.
