The Ties between Greek and Roman Gods

Gods of Ancient Greece and Rome, according to the presentation of ancient people, are demonic powers, embodied in the sacred objects and phenomena and received personal embodiment in the demonic creatures that live in the mountains, seas, caves, springs, trees, etc.

It was believed that Chaos, Earth (Gaia), underworld (Tartaros), and Eros (the beginning of life) existed originally. Gaia gave birth to Uranus, the starry sky, who became the first ruler of the world and the spouse of Gaia. Uranus and Gaia gave birth to the second generation of gods, Titans. Titan Kronos (the god of agriculture) overthrew the power of Uranus. In turn, the children of Kronos, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera headed by Zeus, overthrew Kronos and seized power over the universe. Thus, the Olympian gods are the third generation of gods. The supreme deity was Zeus, the ruler of the sky, thunder, and lightning. Apollo is the descendant of Zeus, a god of light beginning in nature, often called Phoebus.

Athena was of a great honor. She was born from the head of Zeus. She is the goddess of wisdom, all the rational, and the war.

In everyday life, Roman religion played a very important role. The Romans, as well the peoples of Antiquity, worshiped strange phenomena of nature and social life.

The cult of the gods was ancient and revered. Gods personified different sides of agriculture. Goddess Venus was considered the patroness of gardens, abundance, and fertility of nature. There was a god of crops, Saturn.

Since the 3rd BC, the Roman religion was strongly impacted by Greek religion. The Romans identified their abstract gods with the Greek gods. Thus, Jupiter was identified with Zeus, Mars with Ares, Aphrodite with Venus, Juno with Hera, Minerva with Athena, etc.

The Roman pantheon never stayed closed; it was replenished with the deities from overseas. It was believed that the admission of new gods reinforced the power of the Romans. Thus, the Romans borrowed almost the entire Greek pantheon.

In order for the gods to care about the people and the state, they were giving sacrifices, prayers, and special rituals. The sacrificial animal was led to a special altar and killed. A prayer was read during the sacrifice. It was very important for the prayer to sound clearly because the slightest distortion made it invalid.

Priests watched the cult of the individual gods, made sure the prayers and ritual actions were correct, and gave advice. The Romans expected assistance from gods in specific cases and therefore they scrupulously fulfilled the established rites and brought the necessary sacrifices.
