The Causes of World War I

The First World War started in July 1914 and ended in November 1918. There were numerous reasons for this war to start. Let us look at some of them. The actual roots of war are deep and are continuously debated on. The most popular causes of the start of World War I are as follows.

Mutual defense alliances existed between various countries. European countries made mutual agreements which would pull them into battle in case of war. If one country of the alliance was attacked by the enemy, the allies of this country would have to protect it from them and take part in war. Russia was in alliance with Serbia, Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary, and France in its turn was allied with Russia. Great Britain, France and Belgium formed a union, and Japan was allied with Great Britain as well.

When Austria-Hungary started the war with Serbia, Russia had to protect Serbia as its ally. When Germany realized that Russia was mobilizing for war, it started a war against Russia. France was bound to proclaim the war against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Great Britain was involved in war after the Germany’s aggression against France and Belgium. Later Japan took part in the war as well. Italy and the United States entered the war supporting the allies.

Imperialism was another reason for the World War I to start. The concept of imperialism means that a country wants to expand its territory and increase its wealth. Prior to the start of World War I, African and some of Asian countries were the points of argument among the countries of Europe. These countries could provide abundant natural resources. The desire of European countries to build larger empires and get more resources increased confrontation and pushed the world into the First World War.

Another reason for the beginning of World War I was militarism. The race of arms started in the beginning of the 20th century. Germany increased its military power greatly by the year 1914, and Great Britain built up its navy as well. In later years military complex started to influence the public policies of Germany and Russia. This increase of militarism brought the beginning of World War I closer.

The important cause of the start of World War I was nationalism. Almost every European country strived to prove its uniqueness, power and dominance. As an example, the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina did not want to be a part of Austria-Hungary any longer, but wanted to be the part of Serbia. This is one of the examples of nationalism which led to war.
