The tale of Prometheus

Prometheus is the Ancient Greek hero, a chthonic creature. Prometheus is known for giving fire to people and providing them with precious knowledge and crafts, which turned people from beasts to intelligent beings and gave a start to a technical progress.

There are plenty variations of the same tale of Prometheus, but the key points and events are the same in most of them. The tale takes place during the ancient times when people were still living in caves and barely knew how to protect themselves. The Gods, in their turn, lived on the top of Mount Olympus. They were strong and beautiful, and possessed an invincible power over the world and over the people. But there were also other creatures, the so-called Titans, who were in between Heaven and Earth. They were called chthonic, because they were believed to be born in a primordial chaos. Prometheus, a cousin of Zeus, happened to be a medium between the Titans and the gods of Olympus.

Eventually, Prometheus noticed that the only thing the gods on Mount Olympus were doing was having fun fun, while down there people were suffering from hunger and cold. This prompted Prometheus to help the people. He decides to recklessly go against the will of the gods.

Prometheus used to always visit Olympus with a rod, but one day he brought he brought a hollow cane stem instead. At his friend Hephaestus’ blacksmith, Prometheus diverted the owners’ attention with a conversation and hid a piece of coal in a cane steam. No one suspected anything, and Prometheus was able to discreetly bring the fire to the earth and give it to the people. In a tale, the fire given to people is a symbol of knowledge, skills, understanding, and a fine line between the good and the evil.

One day Zeus looked down at Earth and saw that the people had changed. They knew how to heat their houses, cook food, carve the tools, hunt, etc.; he realized that they were gaining knowledge and started their path along the evolution. Zeus was angry because he realized that over the time people might become rivals to him and that someone disobeyed him. The deception of Prometheus was soon discovered. He was overthrown from Olympus and chained to a rock, doomed to suffering. Hephaestus plunged a steel stake into his chest. He was sentenced to suffer until someone sets him free. Fortunately, the suffering of Prometheus did not lasted forever. Hercules, another famous Greek hero, set him free.
