It is not a secret that black people were in a very bad position living in America not that long time ago. In other words, they were just slaves and had to do everything that white owners would order. Even when the slavery was abolished, the situation with black people didn't become good at one moment. They still had to do the hardest and the cheapest job, because all the high positions were taken by white people. This prejudice lasted for a long period of time and even now, in the modern world, there are still racists. It isn't hard to image the life these people had being slaves, but it is also necessary to reveal the truth about sexual oppression of black women in that days, because this is a serious topic that was present in the history of America. It should be presented to the public, because it can show the realities of those days and, maybe, prevent similar situations in the future.
Historians have estimated that about 58% of the enslaved black women, who were in age between 15 and 30 years were sexually violated by white men during the period before the American Civil War. In addition, white women, wives of those men, reacted the way that made the situation with black women sexual assault even worse. Their reactions varied from ignoring or denying the behavior of men, sometimes divorcing with husbands and very often punishing the enslaved women, who became victims of sexual violation. White people despised black one that is why, they didn't think that rape a black woman is something bad.
However, not all white women thought that such situation is all right and they didn't have any desire to let their husbands sleep with enslaved black women. Usually, they didn't take care of these black women; they just wanted to control their husbands. Yet, the situation was so bad that the legal structure formed some incentives for white women to stay quiet about their men's sexual violation. Most of the white women wanted to be financially secure and physically unharmed, that is why, and they preferred to stay silent about everything.
Moreover, white women very often felt humiliated because of their husbands “affairs”. However, they couldn't do anything to change the behavior of men, because they didn't have any power over their husbands. This is the reason, why through physical and verbal abuse, they transferred their emotions into racial superiority over enslaved women.
