The Life Story of Donald McKayle

Donald McKayle was born July 6, 1930, in grateful New York City. He is a famous American dancer, teacher, director, and writer. Engaged in choreography, he is also known for creating socially concert works during the 1950s and1960s. Donald McKayle has shown that skin color has nothing to do with dedication to work. As famous American modern dancer he broked the racial barrier. At the moment, in the Claire Trevor School, Donald McKayle is a Professor of Dance, Modern Technique and Choreography. Together with Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey, and Anna Sokolow he creates modern dance for theatre, television, and films.

Donald McKayle during his childhood was inspired by social dancing, culture, and political awareness. Future modern dancer wants to study African American history, so he joined the Frederick Douglass Society. After reading many books about African American history he shaped the vantage point, that later prove pivotal in his expressiveness as a master dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Donald McKayle’s first dance was organized by his friend, Anna Kaufman. After this performance, he realized that he wants to be a dancer and to devote his life to dance.

In consequence of his professionalism and craftsmanship of modern dance, Donald McKayle opened doors for Afro-American dancers. In his organized dances, each person can use his body as instruments of artistic creation and expression. Famous teacher and director, unlike other choreographers, Donald McKayle has established his works in the repertoires of dance companies. Donald McKayle’ students are involved in modern dances in Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and Cleo Parker Dance Ensemble. Other choreographers often establish companies to ensure their works’ legacy. He has also taught at the Juilliard School, The American Dance Festival, and the other. Donald McKayle believes that students need to be given access to choreographic works of art.

In additional, Donald McKayle formed and directed own company “Donald McKayle and Dancers” (1951–1969). Also, modern dancer maintains relationships with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and the other. Donald McKayle has also choreographed approximately 75 pieces for dance companies.
