The Slaves and the Concentration Camp

The destinies of Jews who lived at the time of Holocaust were terrifying. Those Jews who somehow avoided being shot were taken to concentration camps. At these camps they were sorted either for immediate death or slave labor.

If the people were lucky enough to survive the transportation in stuffed trains, they went to renowned platforms for sorting upon arrival. The people coming out of the trains were divided into two groups. Men went to one side, and women went to another one. The doctor quickly examined every person. Then he made a decision as to whether this weak person could still work or should be put to death. It is worth mentioning that these cruel doctors had given an oath to serve for the good of humanity, and never kept their words.

The doctor resembled a judge who made a final decision about life or death of a Jew. If his verdict was “death”, then the poor person was taken to the gas camera where he was burnt within two or three hours.

The other kind of “life” prepared for the surviving ones could be called “gradual death” without hesitation. They were entitled to slavery at labor camps and had to work under the supervision of German officers.

The conditions of slave labor were horrible. The back-breaking labor lasted from morning till night. The Jews had to drag large stones at the quarry, cut the trees in a forest or work at the factories producing weapons for the War. The ones who worked at the factories were considered to be “lucky”.

The workers of concentration camps were literally starving. Their daily meal consisted of one small piece of black bread, a thin slab of margarine and a little cup of liquid which was supposably soup. There were rarely small pieces of horse meat in the soup.

The Nazis found pleasure in making fun of Jews. They could easily push one of them off the camp wall if they felt like “playing” or strike them randomly on their way to the work site. The well trained German shepherds were waiting for the command from their masters, ready to tear Jews apart any minute.

Even though the concentration camps of smaller size were not known as “death camps”, the conditions of the slaves’ lives there were also terrible. Only tens out of thousands of Jewish workers survived the War at one of these camps.

The work of Jewish slaves at concentration camps had no sense except for violence and torture. It shows vividly how cruel the Nazi invaders were. Millions of Jews died at concentration camps either as a result of inhumane work or deliberate murders.
