Comparing Vygotsky And Elbow's Theories On Academics

Let’s start with Peter Elbow, who is a Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He wrote more than 10 books during his life and a large number of articles. His practices about editing are now taught as the writing process. Elbow invented the technique of freewriting, which is dubbed as a "student-centered movement".

So freewriting is a term, which Elbow used quite often. It is a process of writing without stopping, without thinking about grammar, and without editing. The purpose of freewriting is to create a language that is more natural and interesting and at the same time make the process of writing easier and more exciting.

Peter Elbow states that academic discourse should be accompanied by non-academic discourse. Elbow thinks that academic discourse is the thing that academics use when they publish for other academics. He means that teachers are teaching students to write correctly and formally like students will always write to their teachers or other professionals. Obviously, students have to be learned academic discourse; they will need it during their study for reports, exams and papers. Students should be able to write a formal letter or essay, but formal letter or essay are not always used after a student graduates from school. So Elbow’s theory discusses how teachers should teach their students writing, not just transactional writing.

Lev Vygotsky is a Russian psychologist, who invented Social Development Theory. Vygotsky believes that educators try to develop the writing of their students through their zone of proximal development.

Social interaction is a significant thing in a development of a person. Vygotsky felt social learning precedes development. Vygotsky believed that every function appears first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level.

The zone of proximal development is the distance between a student’s ability to make a task under the guidance of a teacher and the student’s ability to solve the problem without help. Vygotsky believed that learning is occurred in this zone.

Vygotsky’s theory suggests learning contexts in which students play an active role in learning. The teacher should collaborate with his or her students to help students understand the material. Learning becomes an interesting experience for the students and teacher.

So to get better results writing should be taught with both Vygotsky’s and Elbow’s theories together.
