General George Patton and the Revolvers

George Patton was one of the brightest American generals of the World War II. He owned many trademark revolvers and was easy to recognize.

His first revolver was Colt.45 and he owned two of them. However, he gave one of them as a present to the Hollywood star he adored. He replaced this revolver with a 3,5 inch Smith and Wesson.357 magnum. This revolver was shipped to Patton when he was still Lieutenant Colonel in 1935 when he was on duty in Hawaii. This revolver was originally equipped with walnut grips, and its handgrips were converted to ivory in 1940. The grips, although engraved similarly to M1873 Colt, are not an exact match. They have been engraved by a different firm approximately twenty years later.

The general liked revolvers with ivory handles. He understood the significance of inspiring the troops, that is why he wore these fashionable revolvers.

To answer the question why Patton carried two revolvers instead of one, it is possible to say that he took part in the expedition to Mexico held by General Pershing. The purpose of the expedition was to hunt down Pancho Villa who was famous for his bad reputation. During the expedition Mexican gangsters convinced Patton that he should carry at least two handguns. In that trip Patton gained the fame of killing bandits, and he acquired the habit of carrying more than one revolver.

When Patton was a young man he took part in pentathlon competitions. They included pistol shooting, and he practiced his trigger pull techniques for hours. Revolvers were his preference. During World War II he also carried a Colt Pocket Model hammerless. Another model he used was Remington Model 51.380. He used Remington to shoot at the airplane of Luftwaffe. Besides that, Patton liked to wear a Colt Detective Special.38 revolver.

His handguns always featured ivory grips and some of them had his initials and the stars of the United States Army general. Patton carried the Colt M1911 rarely. He never wore Colt Model 03, even though other generals wore it.

Patton was known to be a very brave general. He did inspire his troops with his brightness, and he led the way fearlessly. He became an unforgettable hero, and his revolvers with ivory handgrips were his symbol. Some claimed that he wore revolvers with pearl handgrips, but General Patton always responded that he never did it and used only the ones out of ivory. Historical Patton’s revolvers are currently in the Museum of the World War II in the United States of America.
