Paper on the Phenomenon of Shoplifting

Shoplifting is a special kind of theft, when a person steals products in retail stores without using arms.

In this aspect shoplifting is opposed to armed robbery, although during the arrest of shoplifters, they are likely to resist ad use arms. Modern supermarkets and hypermarkets with no stalls are particularly vulnerable to this sort of thievery. Robbery of stalls at the markets is considered the predecessor of shoplifting.

This phenomenon got new development with the proliferation of network large-scale retail trade. On one hand, administration of various retail giants is well aware of the potential losses from stealing by customers from the open shelves. On the other hand, it understands that at the same time there is a number of contributing factors that compensate for losses from the theft. For example, a typical loss of retailers caused by individual thefts constitutes 1% - 2% of annual turnover, with more than half of thefts accounted for the staff. That is why shoplifting is considered as a kind of production costs. Moreover, the possibility of direct contact with a variety of goods causes bouts of impulse shopping, which compensates for the loss from theft.

To prevent shoplifting companies use a variety of methods: installation of video surveillance systems, false cameras, special anti-theft systems, security, visual tracking of customers, request to visitors to leave their bags at the entrance, and so on.

A potential thief store, as well as a buyer, can be anyone, regardless of age, social class, nationality, and so on. In general, however, they are divided into two groups. The first and the largest group is opportunistic amateurs, that is, those who don’t mind occasionally stealing goods for personal use/consumption. The second group is represented by professionals, who usually specialize in stealing expensive or valuable items for resale.

In some cases, the thief is trying to bring the goods out of the store, while in other cases the food product is consumed directly in the supermarket by a thief that eliminates the need to overcome the difficulties of the removal of the goods from the store. Also, there are cases when a thief in the fitting room puts on clothes sold in supermarkets (tearing off the protection labels from it) and leaves the supermarket wearing the clothes, as if their own. In this case the thief can leave old clothes in the supermarket. In some cases, the theft of this kind is done not in order to increase the number of items in the wardrobe, but instead of washing the clothes by replacing dirty clothes with new and clean clothes.
