The Life of Anne Bradstreet

When researching the life of Anne Bradstreet, students should learn that she was born in 1612 in England. When she graduated at the age of 16, she married Simon, and 2 years later, the whole family immigrated to the US with a Winthrop Puritan group. First, they all lived in Ipswich where they raised 8 children. Anne Bradstreet is one of the first poets who wrote English verses in American colonies, and she became famous after punishing her first literary works in 1650. Her brother decided to take this step without her prior knowledge and agreement.

However, it was the only collection of her poetry that appeared during her lifetime. Then her family relocated to Andover where Anne lived until her death (1672). After her death, her poetry was expanded and published again and again. One of her highly regarded literary works is Contemplations, and it’s all about a sequence of interesting and talented religious poems, but it wasn’t published until the 19th century.

The poetry of Anne Bradstreet belongs to the so-called Elizabethan literary traditions. Besides, her works are also strongly influenced by du Bartas, a French poet who lived in the 16th century. When it comes to her early works, they are quite conventional and imitative in their content and forms, so they remain unremarkable. That’s why her poetical legacy was considered only because of its historical interest for quite a long time.

Anne Bradstreet managed to win her critical acceptance in the 19th century, thanks to her later poetry, which was less derivative and quite personal. The audience should understand that she was a Puritan, but she often questioned and doubted the power of men’s hierarchy and even God. Anne’s love to the physical world and nature often resulted in all kinds of creative conflicts in her poetry. She seemed to find her great hope in future religious promises and her great pleasure in present realities, including her family, house, and nature.

It’s true that only a few American women succeeded to publish their poetry in the past, her literary works were often ignored until they were finally rediscovered by feminists in the beginning of the 20th century. That’s because they found a number of important artistic qualities in her work. Anne Bradstreet died when she was 60 years old in Andover, and she definitely left her literary legacy for future generations.
