Ishmael -- Daniel Quinn: Brief Summary

"Ishmael" provides the idea that human is the greatest creature. Actually, Ishmael – it is a gorilla-telepath. He chooses a random student and teaches his philosophy by Socrates' dialogues.

Ishmael said to his "consumer" student that society and "students", "consumers" always violate the laws of nature. Ishmael explains where it came from the belief that the world belongs to human. Students, in contrast, think that the person belongs to the world. Ishmael states that civilized societies («consumers") demolish the world, and the human superiority is only cultural myth. New generations play in this myth, and as a result the whole extinct species, global warming occurs, and people suffer from mental illness.

The plot of the book is quite peculiar: the protagonist - a disillusioned journalist in modern society - is a newspaper ad: "Teacher seeks pupil. It takes a sincere desire to save the world. Handle personally." Arriving at a specified address in the advertisement, there is... huge-old male gorilla that, as the hero learns gradually, spent his life among the people and in captivity learned not only to think, but also to read and even transfer thoughts by telepathy.

Between teacher and pupil-gorilla-man fastened completely unimaginable conversation about human nature and the history of our species, destroyed countless other species and human that led himself to the abyss. The author (whose ears stick out of the book, of course, without any constraint), in my opinion, perfectly manages a very difficult task: to look at the modern man through the eyes of another, related, but almost wiped out, species - and this view, despite the fact that it was possible would expect, it is not a moralistic or judgmental. This gorilla like cunning Socrates from Plato's "Dialogues", rarely expresses itself: all the main things protagonist speaks for itself.

Each separate idea in this book is not new and is not original, but the author very skillfully puts all these ideas into a mosaic, seeing that as a whole, you are unlikely to be able to look at all that we are creating in the world, a familiar sight. Of course, those who believe that we have built the world all right, consider this book grumbling of some freak of ecology old-hippie. But for those who do not possess this gift of unwavering confidence in the only correct way of development, just turn away from the mirror, which confronts our civilization, "Master," the main character, has not come out.
