Iago in William Shakespeare's “Othello”

In William Shakespeare’s play Iago is the primary adversary of Othello. Iago is the husband of Desdemona’s servant. He despises Othello and carries out a plan to make his life miserable. He tries to convince him that his wife, Desdemona, has a lover, who is Michael Cassio, the lieutenant.

Analyzing Iago from the psychological point of view, we can notice that he seems to be a mysterious personage. The things that he says make listeners worry. He is known to be honest and straight-forward, however he tends to lie and manipulate people at the same time. We can see that he does not deeply care about anybody. There is no sign of heartfelt emotions in him, even though he is married, and supposably he used to be in love. Iago believes other people are foolish. He prefers to devote his time to retaliation, however he does say impressive and beautiful things to make a semblance of a decent person.

Iago is called “honest Iago” by Othello and other personages of the play. His rise through the ranks of the army is well-deserved, and Othello sees him as a great captain. It is interesting that Iago’s behavior contradicts his own reputation. It is hard to understand, how he was able to set up the common opinion of himself as an honest man. This must have been due to his being honest for a long time period. We can also suppose that he used to be genuine in the past, however he made a decision to change for the worse eventually.

Iago shows many qualities of the Devil as he was seen in medieval and Renaissance times. Telling lies and breaking promises, speaking appealing words with the purpose to attract people and lead them to destruction – all of these qualities are the ones of the Devil. Iago can see the vulnerable parts of other people’s characters and uses this to weaken and destroy them. Iago does not have a good reason to do this. He simply likes being malevolent.

The circumstances Iago creates around himself are bitterly ironic. He betrays the people relying on him and what he presents as “good” is actually bad for other people. Iago is obsessed with control and gaining power over others. This consumption with the desire of power finally takes over his life. Iago takes risks to make his cruel plan work. He should now demolish not only Othello, but Desdemona, Emilia and Roderigo as well for his intentions to work out. Iago eventually destroys himself. Cassio turns out to be the only person alive after Iago’s try to murder him, and the only one standing strong when the play ends.
