Developmental Stages of Children

Most theories of development recognize that a person develops gradually, that is, in order to reach maturity, it must go through several stages in series. For descriptions of the child's mental development, there are several schemes.

Some researchers believe that the mental development is a continuous and constant sequence of steps, each of which was prepared earlier. Others argue that the evolution of the child - it is a series of reorganizations, including the addition or suppression of any functions at certain points. We focus on Piaget's theory.

There are three major stages of a child's intellectual development.

Sensorimotor stage (from birth until 2 years)

At this stage, the child masters the motor and sensory abilities. In other words, he listens; he looks at, strikes, crumples, bends, pushes, sprinkles. So little by little different actions are binding together on the basis of genetic mechanisms and the first motor skills. This creates are the new means to achieve certain goals.

Sensorimotor stage includes six stages:

  • Congenital reflexes.
  • Motor skills.
  • Circular reaction.
  • Coordination of means and ends (from 8 to 12 months).
  • Opening of new funds (from 12 to 18 months).
  • The invention of new tools (from 18 to 24 months).
  • The stage of concrete operations (from 2 to 11 years)

There is a further internalization of actions and their transformation into operation, allowing the child to compare, classify, measure, place in a row, etc. So, when dealing with concrete things, the child discovers that something that he finished to build, can be destroyed, and then re-created or made in a different form.

The stage of concrete operations is also divided into several stages.

  • Preoperational level (from 2 to 5 years) - the development of symbolic thinking, allowing the child to imagine objects or stimuli using mental images and mark them with the names or symbols rather than direct action
  • The first level of concrete operations (from 5-6 to 7-8 years) - the child becomes able to understand that the two features of the object does not depend on each other.
  • At the second level of concrete operations (from 8 to 11 years), the child gets a sense of time and speed, as well as the measurements with the standard.
  • The stage of formal operations (from 11 - 12 to 14-15 years)

At this stage, mental operations can be performed without any particular support. In fact, we are talking about abstract thinking, functioning with the help of hypotheses and deductions.
