Rose for Emily is a unique story where William Faulkner tells an interesting story of one lonely and old woman who is stuck in her timeframe. Basically, her father was quite controlling and died many years ago, but this lady still fails to find her own ground. That’s why her house becomes a very hideous looking place on the whole street. In the past, it was quite elegant, but now it’s encroached with decay and dust.
People in this city keep talking about Miss Emily and her lost soul. Quite soon, she starts dating with a young man Homer Barron who works in a local construction company. They start taking regular rides, so people talk about them quite often. Everything changes very fast when this couple is not seen together, and Miss Emily is witnesses buying arsenic in a local drug store. She dies when at the age of 74, and no one sees Homer in this town. After her death, people break into her house and find a room that was shut for many years. This is where they find the dead decaying body of Homer and the imprint of another body.
This book is about conflicts between traditional and nontraditional, new and old, and this major theme is brought to life by the author through different important elements, such as specific settings, characters, etc. In the very beginning of this story, it’s easy to understand for readers that it’s about old versus new. That’s because Faulkner starts the plot with describing the house of Miss Emily that was luxurious, but now it’s dusty and old. This house is a symbol of traditions because it’s aged and stayed the same instead of changing and rebuilding.
The author tells the audience more about the past of Miss Emily to make it clear that her family is well respected in this town. However, she is just an old woman who all people feel pity for. The most dramatic scene in this book is her decision to kill her lover. She does her best to stay old and lead her lifestyle, so this is what causes Emily to murder her lover. That’s because the only possible way to keep him nearby is killing him because it’s the way she was raised by her father.
He was a controlling man who didn’t let her go out of her house and date anyone. When he dies, she just doesn’t understand what to do next. In overall, the audience can see Miss Emily is an old lady who is completely lost and doesn’t know how to act. When she broke up with Homer, she can’t accept this idea, so she just keeps getting ready for a wedding. Suddenly, Emily decides to kill him to keep his close to her.
