Historical Earthquakes in India

India has experienced a number of deadly earthquakes throughout its recent history. Let us look at several examples of them.

The Indian Ocean Earthquake took place in the year 2004. It was the next day after Christian Christmas holiday, on the 26th of December. Its magnitude reached the scores of 9,1 and 9,3. The epicenter of this earthquake was on the West coast of Sumatra, in Indonesia. Approximately 283,106 people lost their lives in this earthquake. This number includes the people who died in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives and Somalia. The disaster was so huge that the islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean disappeared under the water at the depth of three to five meters. Tsunami was caused by the Earthquake, and it stole the lives of thousands of people and destroyed plenty of property.

Another example of an earthquake in India was Kashmir Earthquake which took place in 2005. This happened at the beginning of October. The magnitude of this earthquake was marked as 7,6. Its epicenter was in Muzaffarabad, the region administered by Pakistan. The Pakistani people suffered the tremendous loss of lives and property. There were fewer dead people in India. The general number of deaths reached 130,000. The tremors of this earthquake were felt even in neighboring China, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The Indian Army helped to clear the obstructed places and distributed relief material among people. Medical camps were created in India and Pakistan. The world community helped the victims of the earthquake in every possible way.

The Bihar Earthquake was another major calamity which happened on January 15, 1934. The total number of people who lost their lives then was more than 30,000. The magnitude of this earthquake was estimated as 8,7. Its epicenter was in the southern part of Mount Everest. The wide areas of Nepal and India were destroyed as a result of this earthquake.

Gujarat Earthquake took place on January 26, 2001. Its epicenter was in Kutch, Gujarat and its magnitude reached 7,7. Approximately 20,000 people died in this earthquake and lots of people lost their property.

Another historical earthquake took place in India in 1905. It was Kangra Earthquake. This disaster happened on April 4, 1905. It took place in the Kangra region called Himachal Pradesh. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Himalayas. The magnitude was 7,8. About 20,000 people lost their lives and 100,000 homes were destroyed. The animals and their natural habitat were wiped out as well.
