General Discussion on Unlawful Abortion

The data given by the UN shows that in almost all countries (96%), abortion is permitted if there is a threat to a woman's life. However, six countries - Chile, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Vatican and Malta - prohibit abortion, regardless of the circumstances.

In 50 countries, accounting for 26% of the total, the only legitimate reason for abortion is a threat life of the mother. In addition, in another 82 countries (42%), abortion is legal in some other cases, for example, to save the woman's physical and mental health if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, as well as socio-economic reasons. The remaining 58 countries (28%) is allowed to carry out abortions for any reason.

At the same time, according to a recent study by the World Health Organization and the American Institute of Guttmacher, criminalization of abortion does not help to reduce their numbers. For example, in countries where abortion is banned or allowed only to save the woman's life there is done 37 such operations per 1,000 women of reproductive age, while in countries where abortion is legal - 34. According to scientists, it is much more rational "to invest in modern methods of contraception "than to prohibit abortion at the legislative level.

In general, according to the study, the annual number of abortions has increased from 50.4 million in the world in 1990-1994 to 56.3 million in 2010-2014. This growth was mainly in developing countries. During the same period, the number of abortions in developed countries fell from 11.8 million to 6.7 million per year.

The greatest number of abortions of the 2010-2014 is done in the Caribbean, 65 per 1,000 women of reproductive age each year. They are followed by South American countries, where every year it was made 47 abortions per 1,000 women. At the same time the least artificial abortions were in North America and in Western and Northern Europe.

Despite the fact that the number of abortions in Latin America and the Caribbean during the analyzed period increased by almost 50%, the results of the study of Pew Research Center in 2014 shows that the society in this region are mostly opposed to the legality of abortion. The exception was Uruguay.

Meanwhile, there is a reverse situation in the United States. It was written that 56% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

In Europe, the only country (apart from the Vatican) where abortion is totally banned is Malta.
