The Civil War and American Tensions

There were decades of burning tensions between the Northern and Southern United States. The reasons for these tensions were such issues as the rights of states as opposed to the authority of government, the expansion to the West and slavery. Eventually the tensions exploded into the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865.

After the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln to be the President of the United States, seven states of the South split from the Union. Lincoln did not support slavery. The states which seceded formed the Confederate States of America. Four more states joined them when the Civil War began. The historical battles of the American Civil War took place at Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Vicksburg.

When Lincoln became the President in March 1861, the forces of Confederate states threatened Fort Sumter in South Carolina, held by federal forces. On April 12, Confederate artillery fired the first shots of the Civil War, after Lincoln ordered a fleet to resupply Sumter. Major Robert Anderson, who was Sumter’s commander, gave up after less than two days of bombardment. He left the fort to Confederate forces under the rule of Pierre Beauregard. Other southern states, such as Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee were soon added to the Confederacy. The slave states bordering on them, such as Missouri, Kentucky and Maryland, did not join the Confederacy, however their inhabitants felt positively about this possibility.

The Civil War conflict could have seemed to be an unbalanced one, because the twenty-three states of the Union prevailed in population, arms production, manufacturing and railroad construction. However, the states of Confederation had many experienced military men, including some of the most prominent soldiers and commanders. Besides, they had an idea they were fighting for. They strived to preserve their traditions and institutions established long before that time. Slavery was one of the things they wanted to keep.

The Civil War was also known as the War Between the States. It forced neighbors to fight against neighbors, and brothers against brothers. Eventually, in 1865, the Confederate forces surrendered. The Civil War turned out to be the most expensive war fought on the land of America. Approximately 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers were killed, millions more were injured, and the population and territory of the South were devastated.
