Iago and Macbeth Comparison

William Shakespeare created many great tragedies in English literature. Macbeth and Othello are two particular examples.

Macbeth is the shortest and bloodiest tragedy among others by Shakespeare. Macbeth tells the story of a brave Scottish general (Macbeth) who gets the prophecy from a three disastrous witches that one day he will be the king of Scotland. This prophecy makes Macbeth obsessed by the ambition brought on by other characters, which leads to his downfall.

Tragedy Othello tells the story of a Moorish general who is deceived by his ensign into believing that his wife is unfaithful to him. The ensign’s name is Iago. His intrigues in the final lead to the tragedy as well.

Both of these tragedies are well-known and two of them have characters that are worth comparison – Macbeth and Iago. Both of these characters have similar features and different attributes. One thing they have in common is their ambition.

In the first act of Macbeth we meet the character without getting the description of his appearance by a Captain, who was a witness of Macbeth’s bravery. From the first scene we see that Macbeth is a brave solider, but when he meets with three witches, his physical courage is joined by an obsessed ambition. He feels joy when he thinks that one day he is going to be the king of Scotland. However, he also has doubts that create an inner turmoil. Shakespeare uses Macbeth to demonstrate the terrible effects ambition and guilt can have on a man who lacks strength of character.

Macbeth is often compared to Iago. Both characters are the types of villains. Some researchers say they the image of Iago is filled with more greatness than the whole tragedy of Macbeth. Iago’s character has a depth of thought and knowledge of a human’s soul. Iago represents malicious joy in a human image; he does bad things and enjoys it; tortures and misfortunes of others give him new powers.

Macbeth is not Don Juan who lost his faith and destroyed moral, and then invoked heaven and hell to duel. Macbeth is not Iago either, who never believed in heaven and hell. Macbeth’s conscience has merged with his whole being so much that he can get rid of it only by getting rid of his heart.

Iago is a blasphemer, rogue, and thief, because he has no reasons not to be a villain. Categorical imperative for him is the same thing as court etiquette for other people. They excite ridicule and resentment in him.

Iago has no love and a sense of duty to the Moor. In general, he knows almost nothing about duty and love. For him, these are empty words that are less likely to direct his steps.
