Native American Novels in the 20th century

Pleochroism is the basic property of the American literature at the end of 1970s-1990s. Renaissance of Native American novels, the second bloom of black literature, marked by the Nobel Prize to African-American writer Toni Morrison, and undoubted achievements of Chicano prose are prominent signs of the United States literature in 20th-21st centuries.

The splash of literature of Native Americans in the 1970s was to some extent surprising, as the Second World threw it back. A clear turnaround in the literature of Native Americans happened with the release of the novel House Made of Dawn by Navarre Scott Momaday (Kiowa), who received the Pulitzer Prize. It was then when Native American literary tradition has attracted the most attention of the public that has recognized that the native inhabitants of the country may have the right to speak for themselves. It was then when the ethnic identity of Native Americans brought exceptionally abundant fruit.

Revival of Native American novels is represented by Native American writers born in the 1930s-1950s, whose novels are still being published today: Gerald Robert Vizenor (Darkness in Saint Louis Bearheart; Touchwood), James Welch (The Death of Jim Loney), Leslie Marmon Silko (Ceremony), Karen Louise Erdrich, (Love Medicine; The Crown of Columbus), Thomas King (Green Grass, Running Water), Simon Ortiz, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, and many others.

Their work is a qualitatively new stage in the development of fiction of Native Americans in the United States and the revival of millennia-old Indian literature. It is a synthesis of both traditions, a genuine Renaissance. The specifics of the new prose of Native Americans that manifested for the first time in Momaday’s House Made of Dawn by Navarre is, first-of-all, that the action does not develop in a linear, chronological sequence, but repeatedly, allowing you to identify the really important points (those to which authors come back again and again).

Secondly, the story has no socio-historical and ritual basis. It is developed on four levels simultaneously: physical (natural), spiritual, social, and psychological. This is a full cycle and the full meaning of the Native American rituals (a magic number four in the culture of Native Americans symbolizes integrity). This is the poetics of the original Native American literature, which is the base of contemporary prose.
