The Life of Emma Woodhouse

"Emma" is a magnificent book by Austin, which she valued not very high. Reviews, which appeared in 1816 were not good.

However, it is this work received a very flattering assessment in an article by W.Scott. In this mature work the writer talent manifested itself most clearly, her ironic wit to create a memorable and recognizable images, which will be interesting to modern readers.

The main character is a young noblewoman Emma Woodhouse, which in the eyes of the reader passes the path of development: is aware of her errors and mistakes and finds the right tone in dealing with people.

At first, before us there is a very shy girl who fancies herself an expert on the human senses: in fact, it just noticed the mutual inclination of her governess Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston, a worthy man. The novel begins just with messages about marriage of mentor of young lady.

On the first pages the author describes the way of life of Emma, her position in society, "Woodhouse were here first on the situation" and reported on the first hill, overshadowed by the life of the heroine - about parting with the "dear friend" Miss Taylor. That loss of confidante pushes the heroine to replace the search, which she sees in the face of graduate Pension Mrs. Goddard Harriet Smith.

Jane Austen mocks Emma, which is taken to arrange the happiness of her friend, and in fact almost frustrating very successful marriage of the latter with a local farmer Mr. Martin. The young heroine is constantly mistaken in her assessments of people.

Gradually the conviction of the heroine in her knowledge of human nature gives way to doubt and remorse, which greatly contributes to the long-time family friend and neighbor, Mr. Knightley. This mature man represents mind in the novel, he was genuinely worried about Emma, seeking to help her get rid of the snobbery and be attentive to others.

The conflict in the novel is Emma's encounter with life circumstances that upset her matrimonial plans.

The writer uses the method of distorting mirror: Emma inherent disadvantages and unpleasant Mrs. Elton, which seeks to protect the unfortunate J.Fairfax. After all, the character itself imposes her own opinion to Harriet, completely disregarding the feelings and inclinations of the girl.

Another object of the irony of the author - Miss Bates, an old maid, very pompously, she evokes ridicule and Emma's irritation, and only the intervention of Mr. Knightley, who sharply chastises his young friend, Miss Woodhouse makes recognize her own lack of tact.
