Clyde Barrow’s adolescence and prison time

We all know the story of Bonnie and Clyde and their brutal robberies. Perhaps it is the most famous and popular crime couple ever. Bonnie and Clyde are also famous for the aura of romance around them. Despite this aura, these two people were really severe murders who committed a lot of horrible crimes. Certainly, there was a cause Clyde Barrow became a cold-blooded criminal. Let’s try to find this cause.

Clyde Barrow was born on March 24, 1909, in Ellis County, Texas. There were seven children in his family and he was the fifth. Clyde’s family moved to Dallas in the early 1920s as part of a wave of resettlement that moved people from impoverished farms and placed them in the urban slum known as West Dallas. It was quite a terrible place with piles of garbage, a lot of insects and open sewers. When his family moved to Dallas they were so extremely poor that they have nowhere to live. At first, Clyde’s family had to live under their wagon. When father Henry earned enough money to buy a tent, it was an important social upgrade for the family.

Barrow was first arrested in 1926 when he when he failed to return a rented car on time. After that, he was arrested with his brother Marvin "Buck" Barrow for stealing turkeys. Clyde Barrow had legitimate jobs during the period 1927 through 1929, but he continued to steal cars and rob stores. As a result of his actions, he was sentenced to 14 years at Eastham Prison Farm in April 1930.

We can say that in prison Clyde became a hardened prisoner. Clyde was a small man and because of his size and youth, he was a target of repeated beatings and sexual assaults by an older inmate. Clyde was repeatedly sexually violated by that inmate. He didn’t receive any help from the authorities. The assaults ended one afternoon when Barrow killed the inmate with a pipe. It was his first murder. However, another inmate serving a life sentence took the blame.

Clyde only served seventeen months of his sentence thanks to his mother, whose pleas to the governor of Texas resulted in Clyde’s parole. In an ironic twist, Barrow, who didn’t know that he was about to receive early parole, paid another prisoner for chopping off two of his two toes in order to escape the difficult work. His walk after that was slightly hobbled. A few prisoners said that his prison experiences transformed Clyde from a young boy into a cold-blooded killer.

We can see that Clyde Barrow was a product of extreme poverty and he was also hardened by prison life.
