Keep Yourself Alive by Queen

"Keep Yourself Alive" is a famous song written and performed by the group Queen from Great Britain. This song is known around the world. The guitarist of the band, Brian May, was the author of the song. This track is an opening one on the band’s primary album “Queen” issued in 1973. This song was released as the first single of the band, along with the one called “Son and Daughter”. In the beginning, when the song was just released, it was not very popular.

The first version of this song was recorded in summer 1971. It was produced by Louie Austin and includes the intro played on Hairfred acoustic guitar of Brian May's. Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor did call-and-response vocals. This version remained the favorite one of Brian May.

Being a new rock band, Queen quickly added "Keep Yourself Alive" to their live set. In 1976, Freddie Mercury mentioned that the song conveyed the essence of their band in those days. The number included a drum solo by Roger Taylor and one line sung and spoken by him. "Keep Yourself Alive" was part of the band's live set until the early 1980s.

Freddie Mercury often sang the line "all you people keep yourself alive" instead of the one originally written during live performances. The singer must have made this choice because the alternative version was easier to pronounce.

In July 1973, EMI Records released this song as a single in the United Kingdom. This happened one week before the album Queen appeared in the stores. In several months, in October 1973, this single was released in the United States by Elektra Records. The single did not chart either in Great Britain or the United States, and it was on air on the radio for a short time. This record turned out to be the only single of the band Queen which has not charted in the United Kingdom.

The reviews of the single given by British musical critics were mostly positive. Some of them, like New Musical Express, praised the song for its pure sound of recording and the good voice of the singer. They mentioned that Queen could be very popular if they looked as fine as they sounded. Other critics rated the single as a good one and predicted a happy future to the band. The reviews of Melody Maker complimented the beginning with a guitar and energetic vocal, but stated that the song was unoriginal and was not likely to become a hit.

Nowadays this song is believed to be the highlight of Queen’s debut album. It is impressive that in the year 2008 Rolling Stone Magazine listed the song among the hundred greatest guitar songs of all time.
