The Venetian Merchant Antonio complained of the melancholy. Bassanio who was Antonio’s friend asked him for the loan to court Portia. Antonio gave him an agreement for help and he approached Shylock to ask for a loan. This man was the Jewish moneylender. He was so reluctant to lend the money to the Venetian Merchant Antonio and he agreed to lend only after Antonio staked the pound of his own flesh as the guarantee. Antonio gave his agreement and soon this deal was done. Later Shylock sent the painful blow after his daughter Jessica left him for the warm embrace and sincere feeling of her Christian lover, stealing father’s money. Being so shocked, Shylock considered her actions as the insult for his integrity and pride. That is the reason why he decided to desire the revenge.
When Bassanio got money, he met his loved Portia and courted her with the great success. At the same time Antonio must pay his loan, but he hadn’t enough money for paying this. That is why Shylock charged Venetian merchant to the court for demanding his right of cutting a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Knowing this, Portia decided to go to the court and to try to help Antonio. Portia used her wit to persuade Shylock no to do what he was going to do. She explained that according the contract he had such right, but he would be arrest for shedding the blood of Christian. In result, Shylock had no other variant or choice except the losing gave half of his own wealth because he was going to cut flesh of Venetian Merchant Antonio.

Also, people usually think that this man was so cruel to become a moneylender because he could do anything to earn money in some other way. He didn’t change his mind and was so persistent about the cutting Antonio’s flesh. And this situation demonstrates Shylock from the negative side because people can see how cold his heart is and how negative is his attitude to the other people.
But there are some interesting explanations which give the reasons for his strange behavior. So some people think that Shylock had too bad behavior because it was caused by the society and people’ bias toward the Jews. In this play Shylock considered to be the tragic character which was created on the opinions of the society. During the reading people should understand this character again and again. At the time in England, which is describes in the play, Christians always looked down on the Jews.
