The Issues of College Binge Drinking

The concept of binge drinking refers to the behavior when a person consumes large quantities of alcohol at a time. This quantity can be estimated as more than five drinks in one session for a man, and more than four drinks for a woman. Of course, the norms are individual, but generally the volume of alcohol consumed causes the person to lose control of one’s actions and behavior.

Young people under the age of 21 are especially vulnerable to binge drinking. Statistics shows that approximately 90% percent of the spirits drunk by youth in America are consumed by the people under 21 in the form of binge drinks.

The vulnerability of college students to binge drinking is often caused by their exposure to peer pressure. Of course, genetics, habits and social conditions also make an input to this vulnerability. However, when people study at college, it can be difficult for them to decline the invitation to attend a party. Nobody wants to seem anti-social. Heavy drinking at parties is often considered to be the criterion of somebody’s social success and popularity. It happens that a person gets accustomed to this habit and can start drinking too much. Eventually such a person cannot live a day without a drink and constantly needs to have one, because otherwise he or she feels awkward and unsure. This is the point where the dependence on drinking has already developed.

The consequences of college binge drinking can be very unfortunate. The American National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has reported the results of research on excessive drinking. The results show that about 700,000 students had a fight with another student under the effect of alcohol. Many of these fights led to deaths and injuries. Approximately 400,000 young people from 18 to 24 years old had unprotected sexual intercourse after drinking too much. Needless to say that it often led to undesirable pregnancies and threatened the baby’s health. Binge drinking had a negative effect on academic progress of about one-fourth of the students involved in drinking.

Studies show that binge drinking of college students may be interconnected with their memory loss. Students who were binge drinkers scored worse on memory tests than other students. Even though it does not prove drinking is the reason of that, science still knows about the bad influence of drinking on the state of brain vessels. So, if memory loss does not happen instantly, excessive drinking can still cause it after a certain period of time.
