Origins of The Ku Klux Khan

Ku Klux Klan is an ultra-right organization in the United States, advocated such ideas as white supremacy and white Nazism. In the middle of the 20th century, Ku Klux Klan also opposed communism. The emergence of the concept of Lynching is also connected with this organization.

This secret society was founded by former soldiers-Southerners after the Civil War (1861-1865). The crimes of members of the Ku Klux Klan were usually preceded by a warning sent in a bizarre, but a widely known form. In some parts of the country it was a branch of oak leaves, in others – melon seeds or grains of orange. After receiving such a warning, a victim could either renounce their earlier views or leave the country. If a man ignored the warning, he or she would die. The first Ku Klux Klan flourished in the 1860s in the South of the United States, but in the early 1870s the movement had ceased to exist. Then there were the famous white costumes consisting of robes, masks and conical headgear specifically designed for deterrence.

The second Ku Klux Klan was distributed throughout the country in the early and mid-1920s. It used the same costumes and passwords, but introduced a new character – a burning cross. The third Ku Klux Klan emerged after World War II in response to the movement for the civil rights of minorities. The second and third Ku Klux Klan were in favor of giving the special rights to the descendants of the first US citizens who won the war for independence. All three organizations have extensive track record of terrorist acts, although historians doubt the extent to which the leadership of the second Ku Klux Klan supported this practice.

Probably the name Ku Klux Klan comes from ancient Greek word that means circle and English word clan (the Scots and Irish). There is also a version that the name is associated with a characteristic sound (clang) of a rifle bolt. Another version suggests that the name comes from the Latin word cucullo, which means hood.

The Civil War had a very strong influence on the views of the US population at the time. Reconstruction (1865-1877), which began in the South after its defeat, greatly changed already established relationship of black and white population.

On December 24, 1865, six months after the termination of resistance of the South, in the city of Pyulaski, Judge Thomas L. Jones, and six Army veterans of the South decided to create a secret organization, which is known thanks to a plaque on the wall of the local court building.

One of the veterans named Reid suggested the name Knights of Kiklos. Then the Scot Kennedy suggested that the word clan, which means family or close friends.
