The Different Stages of Freud's Theory of Development

The psychoanalytic theory developed by Freud explains and predicts the human development and its important stages. Basically, there are 5 psychological stages that all people need to go through. First, everything starts with the oral stage where their mouth is the main center for any pleasure. The next stage is anal, and it explains how the attitude of parents affects children’s bowel movement. Another important stage is phallic, and it involves different complex matters. The 4th stage is latent and it’s correlated with the psychological stage offered by Erikson. Finally, the genital stage is the last one developed and reviewed by Freud.

People should understand that these famous psychosexual stages are called Freudian, and everyone should go through them during the development according to Freud. The oral stage lasts from the birth to the age of 1 year, and this is when the pleasure of all babies is directed on their mouth. The anal stage lasts from 1 to 3 years old, and the entire pleasure of kids is centered on their anus.

The next phase is phallic, and all people need to go through it from 3-6 years old. This is when all boys have strong feelings to their mothers and are quite jealous to fathers because they think that they are rivals. On the contrary, girls tend to be much closer to fathers at this stage of their development. The fourth stage described by Freud is latent, and it lasts from 6 years old to people’s puberty. It involves children repressing their sexual interests and moving on to develop their intellectual and social skills.

The last Freudian stage is genital and it starts from puberty and lasts onwards. It involves the reawakening of people’s sexual pleasure and projecting in toward someone outside their families. According to the statements and findings of Freud, any adult personality is influenced by how people tend to resolve conflicts in every stage of their psychological development.

It’s easy to conclude that this theory can only predict and explain some parts involved in the human development. For example, there are many issue concerns in terms of the phallic stage, and some of his findings are focused on sex too much. The main weakness of this famous theory is that it still remains quite generalized because Freud failed to view each person individually and according to personal experiences and life events.
