The Firefighters Union in the USA and Canada

The labor union representing the interests of firefighters and medical workers in the United States and Canada is called the International Association of Firefighters. It was created in 1918 and its main office is in Washington, D.C. The association consolidates approximately 300,000 members in more than 3,000 local communities in each state of America and Canada.

According to the information provided by this labor union, qualified firefighters take care of about 85% of the citizens of the United States.

The association is very active in protecting the rights of the people it is empowered to represent. It strives to lobby the interests of firefighters around the world and looks to unite with similar organizations in Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.

The International Firefighters’ Association has been stimulating progress in the industry throughout the 20th century. The introduction of shift schedules for personnel in the beginning of the previous century is the merit of this association. It has active political and legislative programs, and renowned specialists in the spheres of professional health and security work for this organization. It has also introduced the standards of the firefighter’s profession for the fire service of the North America.

Nowadays this organization helps to provide firefighters and medical emergency workers with the instruments necessary for their jobs. It supports the development of new training programs and supervises the supply of equipment to firefighters. Besides, it controls the selection of staff for fire and emergency departments.

Before the organization set out to protect the rights of firefighters in the early 20th century, the wages of the latter were extremely low. They received approximately twenty-nine cents per hour. They also used to work very long shifts which lasted about twenty-four hours.

There are sixteen Representational Districts in the organization. The regional departments of the association are headed by Vice Presidents, who form the Executive board of the organization. General President and General Secretary are the leaders of the association. Different states of America and Canada relate to the Districts. Federal Fire Fighters who work at Federal Installations in America, Canada and Guam form the sixteenth local District of the organization.
