Nowadays, homophobia is a big problem in many public school systems, and this is what denies students a safe and convenient learning environment. They are regularly discriminated only because of their sexual orientation and they are abused in many ways, including physical, verbal, and academic. This problem takes many hard-working students to a very unpleasant and damaging situation and it creates a negative learning setting.
There are many abusing and rude words and discriminatory phrases used against both strait and homosexual students in modern public schools. According to the latest statistics, a big part of high school students report hearing anti-gay comments and words on a regular basis. Such homosexual students as Sean and Casey are verbally harassed every day only because of their sexual orientation.
For example, Casey is an honorable and good student at his high school and he claims that he’s often called all kinds of anti-gay names. Sean is another talented high school student who reports a few incidents when he was rudely called and abused by his classmates. Both of them liked going to school and attending their classes in the near past, but now they are terrified. While Casey still manages to remain a good student, Sean shows up at his high school quite rarely only because he can’t handle the taunting of other students.
Besides, Casey reported that he was physically harassed because other pushed him many times. This kind of experience is quite common in modern public schools. There are different examples of physical assaults that homosexual students have to experience, including being pushed, just like Casey, being beaten, having many things thrown at them, and even being raped.
It’s worth mentioning that a number of such negative reports have declined over the last few years, but many homosexual students still report being morally and physically assaulted at their high schools. That’s why there should be effective programs and policies to guarantee a safe and healthy school climate. Our society and parents must reconsider the attitude of students toward someone who is different from them. The most important thing is that enumerated and inclusive anti-bullying and non-discrimination policies provide people with the necessary basis for school safety and equality, so they all should be implemented.
