The Civil War Songs

During the Civil Was music was important both to the Union and the Confederacy. Soldiers sang songs on battlefields, around campfires, and while marching. Songs helped them feel better when things were sad. Each side often borrowed the tunes and lyrics from one another.

The songs during the Civil War told about the events that were happening at the time – about soldiers leaving homes, life in a camp, sufferings on battlefields, and victories. The songs were sung during sang marched to cheer everybody up. Often the opponents serenaded the other side and even the battles were stopped in order for the troops to listen to the music. Songs of the union show the way unity developed in the North. They talked about the purpose and asked for heroism. George Root, a composer who wrote more civil war songs than any other composer, wrote The First Gun Is Fired after the battle of Sumter.

Songs of the South were in such genres as rallying songs, campfire favorites, sentimental favorites, and patriotic songs.

There are at least two versions of songs, as the sides copied them from each other. George Root also composed Battle Cry of Freedom, a song about the flag as a very important symbol at the time. The song was very popular during the war and it was parodied in the South.

The most popular marching song of the Union troops was John Brown’s Body Lies a Mould Ring in the Grave written by Thomas Bishop. Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist, wrote words to the musi and made it into The Battle Hymn of The Republic. The song was one of the most famous patriotic songs.

Another popular song was Dixie’s Land, a northern minstrel song written by Daniel Emmett, who was upset when the song was used during Jefferson Davis’s inauguration.
