The Struggle of the Two Women for Freedom

Let us speak about the struggle for freedom in India and mention the contribution of women into it. The women of India fought for their freedom bravely and had to deal with various tortures, exploitations and difficulties to earn this freedom.

When male freedom fighters were put to prison, Indian women took charge of the struggle. The participation of women in India's freedom struggle began in 1817. Plenty of courageous women fought for the independence of India from the British rule. The list of their names can be long: Bhima Bai Holkar, Rani Channama of Kittur, Rani of Ramgarh, Rani Jindan Kaur, Rani Tace Bai, Baiza Bai, Chauhan Rani, Tapasvini Maharani, etc. Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Vijayalakmi Pundit and Annie Bezant are the women of the 20th century who are remembered even today for their unique contribution both in battlefield and in the field of politics.

Let us examine the life stories of the two prominent women in more detail. Annie Besant is an example of a courageous woman freedom fighter. She was a member of high society in Britain and women’s rights activist. She eventually got involved in the Indian freedom struggle. She joined the Indian National Congress and in 1917 was elected as its president. She initiated the Home Rule Movement, demanding autonomy and self-rule for the Indian state. She was immensely interested in theosophical activities. During the Independence struggle Annie Besant played a significant role in organizing demonstrations and protests. She was arrested several times. In spite of the opposition from Great Britain and even within the Congress, she continued expressing her opinion about India’s right for Independence in the late years of her life.

Another prominent woman who fought for freedom was Kamala Nehru. Besides being the freedom fighter, she was the wife of the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This lady actively took part in the Swadeshi movement and supported the burning of foreign goods as an indication of protest against the British Empire. Kamala spent a large part of her time at Gandhiji’s Ashram, trying to absorb the ideals of Gandhi-ism. She was one of the inspirers of the Non-cooperation movement in 1921. This brave woman was constantly in the shadow of her husband, a popular national leader, however, she found her own place and convinced the groups of women to take part in the freedom struggle. Kamala also went to jail twice under the British rule.
