The Greek mythology as representation of ancient Greek lives

Nowadays, the word “myth has a negative connotation” and it means something that has not enough of authenticity. However, the situation wasn't like this in the period when ancient Greek lived. Greek mythology, as in other ancient countries and cultures, was utilized as belief to explain the living environment, the natural phenomena they faced every day and the passing time. Myths also have direct connection to Greek religion. It provided an explanation of the gods’ lives and origin. Moreover, people used myths to re-tell different historical events to their descendants, in order to save this connection between generations and educate young people. What is certain is that the myths were very popular in Greek society and it was represented in their art. To see this representation was possible almost anywhere starting from sculpture on public building and finishing with scenes painted on pottery.

Such thing as literacy wasn’t wide-spread that days, that is why, the process of passing was done in an oral way, for the first time, as scientists suppose, by Mycenaean and Minoan bards from the 18th century BC. Such re-telling of every myth depended on audience interest and local events and prejudices, that means that the myths could be changed according to the situation. However, scientists think that it still could have certain rules of presentation, so that the story wasn’t change in a radical way.

The next development step in the myths presentation was creating of poems of Hesiod and Homer around the 8th century BC. This was the first time when mythology was presented in a written form. Moreover, it became very popular among people. The next written representation of one of the myths was between 1800-1200 BC in the “Odyssey”. Hesiod’s “Theogony” provides a genealogy and classification of gods and his “Works and Days” gives a description of the human being creation.

Started from the 8th century BC, myths also gained its place in pottery representation. The great amount of different mythical scenes were presented on ceramics of all shapes and functions. Its main goal was to spread the mythology to a wide audience. Myths were popular through the centuries, which can be proved by such great buildings as the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus and the Temple to Apollo. The 5th century BC became a time where myths were presented in a new way – through the theatre that made them even more popular.
