Achilles vs. Roland: Comparison

Achilles is the main hero of the poem, harsh and unforgiving warrior. The image of Achilles has typical traits of the mythological epic hero, a brave warrior, in whose value system the most important thing is military honor. Proud and quick-tempered, he is involved in a war not so much in order to bring back to the king of Sparta, Menelaus his wife Helen kidnapped by Paris as to glorify his name. Achilles craves more and more exploits that will enhance his fame of invincible warrior. The meaning of his life as he sees it, is to constantly risk. Achilles despises quiet life at home and prefers a serene old age, death in battle.

Roland is the protagonist of "The Song of Roland." Roland is a brave warrior, despising dangers. His character distinguished by pride and arrogance, typical character, accustomed to win victories. When he notices that their small squad looming superior forces of the enemy, he rejects the advice of Olivier to blow the horn to be heard, so the soldiers of Charles come to the rescue. He, as befits the epic hero, completely relies only on their own strength. Selfless dedication vassal of the emperor, a willingness on his first request to sacrifice his life - the main motive of the "Song", in which there are no pictures of peaceful life and life, but the military advice are described in detail, battles and fights. Roland acts as the "Song of Roland" the embodiment of all virtues, which, according to the ideas of his era, had to have a faithful servant of the emperor and courageous Christian warrior.

As we can see, these two great epic heroes have many similarities. Both Achilles and Roland strive to prove and emphasize their heroism and greatness. They appreciate only the bravery, courage and strength. Each of them is trying to show that he is the greatest warrior of his time and never lose on the battlefield. Both characters prefer life in the battles, not peace weekdays in a cozy house. But it's worth noting there are differences between them. The main reason for Achilles' participation in the war - it is his own benefit: fame and satisfied vanity. He fight only in order to achieve even greater glory and to show its status as a great warrior. Roland, in turn, is guided not only by motives of personal gain and glory. He acts in the name of the king whom he serves.

It can be concluded that despite the fact that they are the property of different cultures, they have a lot in common. This makes it possible to identify the characteristics of the hero of the epic as a literary unit.
